GARDEN PARTY. AMERICAN CONSUL'S PRAISE. Organised by the entertainment committee of the Auckland Red Cross Society, a successful garden party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sehofield. Lochiel Road, Kemuera, on Saturday afternoon. Mr. J. (~ Groeninger. Consul for the United States in Auckland, otlicially openc<l the function, wliile Canon R. (.'. Coats, president of the Society, and Mrs. Coats were also guests of honour. '"I have found from many personal observations in different parts of the world at which 1 have been stationed, that the Red Cross Society functions best when conditions are worst," said Mr. Groeninger. His first contact with the society was in Copenhagen in 1915-16 when conditions among British prisoners of war in the camps in Germany were very bad, especially in regard to food supplies. Hera, the work of the Red Cross, in conjunction with the International Y.M.C.A., brought much needed relief and improvement until the end of tho war. The speaker concluded by referring to the work of the American Red Cross, and said that the society in America was held in very high trust and regard by American officials. At the garden party there were present men's and women's voluntary aid detachments of the Rod Cross and also the women's transport corps of the society. Musical items were provided by tho To Akarana Girls' Silver Band and dancing numbers were presented by the pupils of the Misses Beresford, assisted by the Misses Iv. and F. Sheet. Mrs. P. Heath-Prccsit, chairman of tho entertainment committee, acknowledged tho assistance of the following organisations:—Royal Society of St. George, St. Andrew's Ladies' Auxiliary, Overseas League, Pen women's Club, Townswomen's Guild, New Women's Club, Ex-Service Women's Association, and also of the various Red Cross detachments.
