GAY ROSETTE HITS FRONT AND STAYS THERE

THREE LENGTHS VICTORY OVER \UGMENT, WHO TAKES SECOND STAKE FOR FIFTH TIME ON END.

The Franklin Cup at Pukekohe this afternoon proved a good thing for the three-year-old Gay Rosette, who showed her heels to the field from start to finish. At the Thames meeting in January (his mart , won a double in the same manner, but, later on, on Anniversary Day, failed in soft going at lillerslie. A second and an unplaced performance followed at Te Rapa, and then this afternoon shn struck a fast track, on which she revels. The race started down the straight entrance, and as soon as the contesiants settled down Gay Rosette -was in front. Running nlons; the back she opened up a gap of half a dozen lengths, and from then on she did not look like being overhauled. Braham and Augment chased her practically throughout and along the bark Foxsen moved up into a handy position, and her supporters thought she was going to repeat the run which enabled her to overhaul and defeat Orelio at Te Aroha last Monday. But Gay Rosette hit the straight full of running still pursued by Braham, Augment and Foxsen. She went on to score a hollow victory from Augment and Foxsen. This was the fifth occasion on end since winning at Rotorua that Augment had run second.

A furliiup Mtter the ~r:irt Cay Rosette. "■,m in charge from Brahman. Augment. Prital, British T.-i.-.nt, Queen City, Wildore. [.-,n. Full Hand. Black Miwk, I'Vix-pii ami Ciipper. with Barrister last. (ii>in r .' along t"ie bai'k, Gay Rosette was out half a do/.en lengths clear of Brahman . r u,.i Augment, who were followed by British Talent. Queen City, Prival. \Vilrlore and Foxscn. who was moving up fast. The field began to close on Gay Y!' - >>pttn croi-ising the top. and entering the straight she was two lengths clear of Brahman, who was closely followed by Augment. Foxscn. Wildore and Pern. Augment and FoXisen then challenged, but had no «how with Gay K"?ntte. who won by tiller lensjthe from Augment, who bent Foxr-en by a head. YVildore was right up fourth, with (■'Much. Full Hand, Brahman and High rif'iight next. Surprise in Hack. ■ lustina created *a surprise when she w■ in the Waiuku Hack Handicap. She inn a long way back early, but finished with a great run to: head off Chain Acre. The latter ran his best race since scoring lit Cambridge on Labour Day. British Mint put up his best performance to ■ late when he came on to get third. Glen I'onnell tried to lead all the way and had a big break on the field at the home iiirn, hint he stopped quickly. Glen < onnell. Buccaneer and Chain Acre were the first out, and as they crossed the top Glen Connell was about four lengths rluar of Surpai, who was followed by Llueeaneer, Chain Acre, Estro, British Mint, Maxown and Justina. Glen Conw>ll wae half a dozen lengths clear of ( hain Acre and Surpai at the home turn, with a gap to British Mint, who was ;itlended by Estro, Maxown and Justina. llnW-way down Chain Acre headed Glen (onnell, while Justina, and later, British Mint put in their claims, Justina getthe verdict by a head from Chain Acre, with British Mint two lengths away third, followed by Maxown, Red Warden, Estro and Surpa.i Goes One Better. Master Appellant, who finished second 10 Karotonga at Te Aroha last Monday, went one better to-day when he won the- Puni Hurdles. He waited on the leaders to the. straight and, taking charge after crossing the la6t obstacle, went away to win easily from Lapidarian. The latter was alwaye prominent and he ran a good race considering this was his first outing since he got kicked at the post and had to be withdrawn from the hurdle event at the Auckland summer meeting. C'appy was the leader for thre«-quarters of the distance, but faded out over the last part. Silver Eagle broke down and pulled up after going about half a mile, while Bright Idea, who finiehed fourth, was unlucky in that his jockey lost an iron going out of the straignt. Favourite Wine. Land Court, who had sJiown good form previously this season, was made a good favourite for the Bombay Handicap. He was always nicely placed and half-way down the straight ran to the front to score comfortably. HineIti put up her best performance to date when she finished second, while Kaalooa came with a good run at the finish to get third. Nithmotint was the first to show out from Heroic Star, Royal Melody, Land Court, Hine-Iti and Kaalooa. Royal Melody was in charge crossin" the top from Heroic Star, Land Court, Nithmount, Hine-Iti, Golden Survey, Foxmint and Kaalooa. Heroic Star had run past Royal Melody before the straight was reached, the pair being followed round the turn by Nithtnount, Land Court, Hine-Iti (who was wide out) and Kaalooa. Land Court did best to win by a length and a half from Hine-Iti, who beat Kaalooa by a head. Heroic Star wae fourth and then eame Lady Reynard, Foxmint and Royal Melody.

Hot Favourite Scores. Nil-lit Pilot, after his success at IV Ha pa ami his good third in the Champion Uni-k Cup there, was made a very hot favourite for the Dynes Fulton .Memorial Handicap. He was one of the first away, but settled in behind the leaders, and when they swung wide at the home turn he came through to win decisively. Landveyor and Happy Ending, finished on to get second and i!■ ■>-

respectively, the last-nanwd coming from a long way bark. This horee has been most consistent on his northern trip.

Horeke, Flying Vixen, Bronze Emerald, Night Pilot and Landveyor were the fir»t to become prominent, but going along the back Horeke and Flying Vixen wore in charge from Mysito. Night Pilot, Bronze Emerald, Landveyor, Vitement and Foxwood, with Happy Ending much further back. Flying Vixen led into the straight from Horeke, Mysito. Bronze Emerald, Vitement and Landveyor, with Night Pilot on the rails just behind them. The lastnamed was followed by Gold Card. Maioro and Happy Ending. The leaders swung wide at the turn, and Night Pilot shot through to win by a length and a quarter from Landveyor, who beat Happy Ending by a head. Corot was fourth, and then came Gold Card and Maioro. The Open Sprint. Brazen Bold, who had not raced since tlie Auckland spring meeting- in October, surprised by winning the open sprint, the Pukekohe Handicap. He wae always one of the leaders, and stayed on to beat the favourite. Rex Maitland. narrowly. Foxola, who has not raced for some time, showed that she is likely to return to form by finishing third. The race was robbed of a good deal of interest through Aero King, Softly and Trilliarch falling when about four furlongs had been covered. Gfandora was slow away, and Ngawiri led Brazen Bold, Aero King, Orate, Rex Maitland. Softly, Foxola and Trilliarch as they raced along the back. Ngawiri was first into line, juet ahead of Brazen Bold and Rex Maitland, with Orate, Foxola and Brazilian next. Brazen Bold and Rex Maitland then drew away, the former winning by a neck, with Foxola two lengths and a half away third. Orate was fourth, and then came Ngawiri. Young Paddon and Merry Vaals. The totalisator figures were £54,347 10/, against £49,583 last year, an increase of £4764 10/.

When Aero King fell in the Pukekohe Handicap, R. W. McTavish, his rider, received slight concussion and was unable to ride in the last race.

L. Brown, who rode Chain Acre in the Waiuku Handicap, was called before he stewards and warned to be more vigorous in his riding in future. e Results:— WAIUKU HANDICAP of £220. ' ipuatia jumped out smartly and led from Funny Fox, Panoni, Kronos, June I'ide, Powys and Autoscore.
