Storing Potatoes

THE storage of potatoes out of doors when there is insufficient space inside is a comparatively simple operation. A she.ltered corner of the garden is choeen and the ground is levelled. The tubers are placed in a cone-shaped heap and covered with a six-inch layer of, straw or bracken. A trench is then dug round the heap and the excavated soil placed over the heap. This layer of soil should be not less thaw nine inches across and made le.vel by beating it down with the back of the spade. A drain pipe should be placed in the apex of the heap to give ventilation for a few weeks, after which it may be. taken away and the hole filled with soil. It is essential that frost does notreach the tubers. During'severe weather it is advisable to cover the heap with a layer of hedge trimmings or dry litter.
