SEXUAL OFFENCES.

PREVALENCE AMONG MAORIS. COMMENT BY JUDGE. (0.C.) GISBORXE, this day. Regret at the high proportion of cases involving sexual charges, all against young Maoris, was expressed by Mr. Justice Johnstone at the opening of the Gisborne session of the Supreme Court yesterday. These cases arose, he thought, out of the Maoris' living conditions and lack of parental control, and, if the native race wag not to become degraded, such crimes must be discouraged. Where they were proved, the grand jury jnade a recommendation that his Honor's comments in respect to sexual cases among Maoris should be noted by elders of the Maori race, and that same better standard of control over young people of the race should be aimed at. His Honor stated that he fully agreed with the jury's recommendation, which he would be pleased to convey to the correct quarters.
