RAIDER CHASED.

Unsuccessful Attack On British Convoy. * SUPPLY SHIP SUNK. (Reed. 1 p.m.) RUGBY, Dee, 29. The Admiralty states that on the morning of Christina# Day a powerful enemy warship attempted to attack one of our convoys in the North Atlantic. One ship of the convoy was hit and received slight damage. The enemy withdrew at high speed as soon as she realised the convoy was escorted. The escorting force immediately gave chase and was able to engage the enemy at long range. Visibility, which had been variable, decreased rapidly, until it was reduced to half a mile. One shell was seen to burst a midship the enemy but it was not possible to state the extent of further damage inflicted by our gunfire.

The Berwick, one of the escorting force, sustained slight damage and five casualties. She remains at sea as- an effective unit of the fleet. During the pursuit of the enemy raider in ° low visibility the German vessel Baden (8204 tons) was intercepted but immediately set herself on fire and had to be stink by one of our warships. It is considered probable that the Baden was acting as a supply ship for the German raider.
