HOTEL BOOKMAKERS. 1 CLERK TO PAY FINE OF £25. "The defendant, when spoken to in a city hotel by Detective Gordon on Friday last, admitted he had 'been operating for three years," said Detective-Sergeant Xalder in the Police Court to-day, when Charles Max Thorpe, clerk, aged 50, pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Mr. Nalder said complaints had ibeen received about 'betting in city hotels, and up to the time Detective Gordon spoko to him Thorpe had taken 33 bets that day, amounting in all to £12 15/. He was a married man and had two previous convictions for similar offences. "This type of man has (become a pest about hotels. Men go in to have a drink, get in touch with men like the defendant and make bets, and go home with a portion of their wages gone," •said Mr. Xalder.
Mr. Morling, S.M., fined defendant £25.
