RAPID SCORING BY CANTERBURY

SENSATIONAL WIN. OTAGO IS DEFEATED. 306 UP IN 145 MINUTES. HADLEE—O'BRIEN CENTURIES. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Canterbury secured a sensational victory by seven wickets over Otago in the interprovincial cricket match. Faced with the seemingly impossible task of scoring 303 rune in less than two hours and three-quarters, the Canterbury batsmen scored so fast that victory was obtained with more than 20 minutes to spare, and if is doubtful whether there has ever before been a more sustained fast-scoring rate in a big match played at Lancaster Park. Heroes of Canterbury's innings were Hadlee and O'Brien, who added 210 for the second wicket in 82 minutes. Hadlee made a brilliant 144, which included 14 fours and one five. O'Brien had one six and 10 fours in his 101. From the beginning runs came at an amazing rate. Fittv appeared in 25 minutes, 100 in 50 minutes, 150 in 74 minutes, 200 in 90 minutes and 250 in 111 minutes. Conditions -were again perfect, and although the crowd was meagre early in the day it gradually increased as Canterbury's chances improved. Knight and Duncan again gave Otago a good start with a stand of 104 for rhe first wicket. Robertson, whose 56 was the top score for Otago, started off briskly, but later slowed down. His display was more solid than brilliant.

Hadlees fcatting was the highlight of Canterbury s inning*. From rhc start he looked for runs, and his innings was one ot the beet he has ever played for the province. : O'Brien, although overshadowed bv his captain, played easily Jus best inning* since he returned from England last year.
