AUCKLAND TROTS.

NED WORTHY'S CUP. FREE HOLMES' DOUBLE. SAY OF OUTSIDERS. The honours of the Jubilee Cup, principal event at the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's summer carnival yesterday, undoubtedly went to Ned Worthy, who led all the way and won narrowly from Bold Venture, with the each-way favourite, Molly juirect. third. Ned Worthy was driven a splendid race by W. J. Doyle, and after covering the first"mile and a halt" in 3.23, he van on strongly to put the tinal half mile by in 1.3—1.26 for the journey. However, the race left one with the impression that both Bold Venture and Molly Direct were somewhat unlucky. Molly Direct was in a bad pocket at the home turn, and Bold Venture five lengths further back. Mitchell looking for a run. Realising that the only chance he had was to pull Bold Venture to the outside, the Cambridge driver got his opportunity only when well in the home stretch, and the mare then finished with a great burst of speed—to fail by a neck. She was travelling, better than anything else at the judge's box. Molly Direct did not get out of her pocket, and she, too, was going nicely at the end. The second leg of the double was won by Worthy Need, driven a nice race by the' veteran reinsman. Free Holme*;, who had ■won with Toceetie earlier in the day. It was a treat to see this 70-year-old horseman handling the ribbons in his own inimitable style, whether it be on the fence, in the middle of .'. big field, or on the outside. Not a favourite succeeded during the afternoon and there were several substantial dividends. Despite the success of outsiders, speculators were rtill besieging the totalisator at the final event, with the result that the total investments for the day were £75.204 10/, an increase of £9176 10/ on the amount handled for the corresponding day last year.
