SIX MONTHS?

WAITING TIME. QUESTION OP RETICULATION. The next question to be decided is that of getting the city supply for all purposes over to tho residents- of the Xorth Shore boroughs at the earliest possible moment. Quite obviously this cannot be done at once. The position is that Birkenhead borough is receiving a city supply for all purposes through a pipe-line laid across the harbour to that borough, but this ie sufficient for Birkenhead alone. To serve Xorthcotc, Takapuna and Devonport a much larger pipeline laid from the AVaiiakere ranges across the upper harbour, will be required.

It was explained to a "Star" representative to-day that the normal joint eonsumption of the Devonport and Takapuna boroughs is 5,300.000 gallons a week, and the Xbrthcote borough requires approximately a million gallons a week. This makes the extra water required for the trans-harbour boronghs practically a million gallons a day. The laying of reticulation for such "supply is considered likely to occupy six months.

This position was put before the Board of Health in the City Council proposals, and the <«overnmenfs influence in expediting delivery of the material? needed for the scheme in the event of •ts approval was requested. That point of being able to secure th<» materials readily at the prevent time is a substantial factor in the problem of getting the work done expeditiously. It is therefore, obvious that residents across the harbour must possess their souk in ]Mtience and their bodies in the present Jimited ration of city water for some months to come. Their irial ir this resjiect is likely to be somewhat alleviated with the falls of rain which appear imminent adding a supply to tank water as well as giving to the'lake supply an element of purity that may break down its present * dietas tefal potency.
