NEEDS OF NORTH SHORE.
"There is sufficient margin in the Waitakere Ranges to supply the North Shore requirement of approximately a million gallons a day." said tlie city waterworks engineer, .Mr. A. D. Mead. this morning. Mr. Mead added that he had recommended to the Auckland City Council that if anv large consumer came on it would l>e desirable to proceed with augmentation work*. Survey and investigation work had been carried out at Huniiii and the Waitakere*. and construction work could be started with a minimum of delav.
Mr. Mead pointed out that the supply at Wnitnkere wa« computed on the driest jwriixl experienced in Auckland, as a large quantity of water went over tlie spill nays in winter time, and during wet weather. On the Waitakere lJanges there was at present a catchment area of 0424 acres, an<l the total storage in the four re>ervoirs there was 1 !.">(>!» million gallons. The city's average daily consumption for the year 1939-40 was 10,027.(K»u gallons, and the maximum daily consumption was 14.r<i2.U00 gallons.
