MAILS DAMAGED.
FIRE IN STEAMER. OUTBREAK QUICKLY CHECKED (PA.) XELSOX. this day. Forty niinutea after the steamer Arahura left Nelson for Wellington on Saturday evening fire was discovered in her hold amongst bags of letter mails which had been taken aboard just prior to the ship's departure. The outbreak was extinguished in 20 minutes before a strong hold could Ik* obtained, but a number of baps of were damaged by fire and water. Damage to other cargo was slight. Sonic bales of hops were affected. The cause of the fire is unknown.
