GENERAL DOBBIE'S CAREER.

With Malta so much in the news, and with its Governor-General, Sir Charles Bonham Carter, retiring, it is interesting >to review the career of the actingGovernor, General W. G. S. Dobbie, C.8., D.5.0., C.M.G. General Dobbie came from a celebrated lighting family, hU grandfather, who was a captain in the Royal Navy, having 55 descendants participating in the Great War, all as officers. His father was a colonel in the Indian Army, while one of his •brothers, Brigadier-General W. H. Dobbie, fought in the Dacoit Rebellion and at Mesopotamia.

General Dobbie, himself, was educated at Charterhouse and Sandhurst, later fighting through the South African War as a -lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He fought in the Great War. finishing up as a colonel. In 1928 he went to Palestine, and in 1930 was sent to Egypt to establish an army. In 1935. he was sent to Singapore as commandant of the Army forces, being recalled just prior to the outbreak of war. He was sent to Malta as acting-Governor and Commander of the Forces in May of this year. General Dobbie's brother resided in New Zealand for several years prior to his death and was a well-known inventor, at one time being in partnership with Thomas Edison. He invented a component without which trams would not be practicable. Mrs. Dobbie and two of her sons live in Auckland. I
