One of the severest front* on record was in the year 1814. It licgan with a fog and reached it* climax on January 22. The River Thame* wax frown for a week. There wa* snow four feet deep, and soldier* had to cut a way through for the coaches. A contemporary account read: "Astonishing evolution* were performed by the skater*. Skipping on skate* and tho Turk-cap backward* bciny the most conspicuous .. . Elegant ly-dret»scd female* dashed between tho hillock* of snow with great bravery."
