GOLDFIELDS CUP.
BEATS PRINCESS LINNETT.
TROTS AT THAMES. An exciting finish between two, Vera Worthy and Dolores Silk, resulted in the opening event, the Yararn Handicap, at the •" r hames Trotting Club's spring meeting at Parawai racecourse to-day. The weather was beautiful, there was a good attendance, and the track was in excellent order.
Backers made Golden Journey favourite, but he broke at the start, as did Snowy Bingen and i'eter Harvester, and all three were never possibilities afterwards. Vera Worthy took the lead early, and with a round to go was three lengths clear of Port Chalmers, who was half a length in front of Dolores Silk, with Gold Kip close up. Dolores Silk went to the front along the back, but was joined again by Vei a Worthy at the straight entrance. From that point the pair had the race to themselves and fought out a great finish, Vera Worthy getting the decision by a neck. Port Chalmers was three lengths away, and Gold Kip, who wa» fourth, about 50 yards further back. Good Performance. There wa« another close finish in the Karaka Handicap, in which Peter's Find got up in the last stride to defeat Northern Smile, who looked to have the race won half a furlong from the post. Peter's Find, who showed promising form as a two-year-old last season, was always handy to-day, but was forced to cover extra ground crossing the top, and to then get up and win was a solid effort. Guide Peter, Pearloro, Bingen's Fashion, Peter's Find and Velvet Cushion were the leading division at seven furlongs. Magic Task then went to the front to take the lead opposite the stand and show the wav across the top two lengths clear of Guide Peter, with Pearloro and Peter's Find handy and Northern Smile moving up. Northern Smile then went into the lead and appeared to have the race won, bnt Peter's Find challenged, and. keeping up a good run, just got up to touch Northern Smile off bv a nose. Mapic Task hung on well to be onlv a neck away, and was followed bv * Bingen's Fashion and Davey Day. Kesnlte:— **'^■Jf 3 ZFyjs w> *g?.« I—J-VptA WORTHY, b m. ucd by Trmvli Uw»n <3r. o. ifc! . .
