SPONTANEOUS GIFTS.
Daily Sums Received For The Purchase Of Spitfires.
ALL EMPIRE CONTRIBUTES
(Reed. 10 a.m.)
RUGBY, Aug. 18.
An interesting minor feature of the most recent phase of the war—the battle of Britain—is the quite spontaneous individual gifts made daily by rich and poor towards the construction of fighter aircraft for the Royal Air Force.
Funds for the purchase of Spitfires have been started in almost every corner of the Empire. In liritain every day not only are individual gilts received varying from £20.000 received yesterday from one family to the proceeds of the auction of a pedigree calf from Xorth Ireland, but factories and towns and private organisations are voluntarily instituting special funds.
Within a short time of opening such a fund at Southampton yesterday £300 had been contributed by Southampton citizens. Xo official prompting , has ever been made towards the institution of such funds, and none clearly is necessary. ' _
