The statement that ten pailcars were on order but that they had not been allocated yet was made by the Minister of Railways, Mr. Sullivan', in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon when replying to Opposition members who sought an extension of railcar facilities immediately.
Mr. Roy (Opposition. Clutha) put in a plea for a railear service on the Catlins line from Balclutha to Owaka.
Failier Mr. Jull (Opposition. Waipawa) had suggested an extension of the railear service in the interests of Hawke's Isav. stating that it would be of advantage if it were possible to run the Xew Plymouth car everv niyht instead of three nights a week, lie thought the railear was ;_>oiii2 to be the salvation of passenger traftfc on the railways. He trusted that the Minister would not be slow in putting his foot down on some of the redundant motor services running parallel to railways— services that were paralysing railwav trafhe.
Mr. McCombs (Government. Lvttel- ): A , .y ear vou would have scieamed if we had done that.
Mr. Jull: Would I? How do vou know what I will do next vear' (Laughter.)
In his reply the Minister of Railway* Mr Sullivan, said he had good hope, that the present year would be a better one financially than last vear.
