GROWING PROBLEM.
PEAK HOURS ON TRAMS. MINISTER APPROVES NEW PLAN. Proposals aiming at the reorganisation of the hours of work by a system of "staggering," with the object of effecting a more economic method of tram transport during the peak periods of morning and evening, have met with the approval of the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple.
An indication of the Minister's atti tiidc was given in a letter received by the Auckland Transport Board this morning, in which the Jlinuttcr expressed interest in the proposal*, as outlined in comprehensive reports submitted, and stated that he proposed to refer the scheme to authorities in other centre* where trams were operate-! with the idea of formulating comprehensive plans. The chairman, Mr. W. H. Nagle, said that immediate steps would be taken to call together the committee dealing with the matter with the object of formulating practical steps. He thought it would be advisable to work with authorities elsewhere, and was ofi opinion that the plan would meet with j (success. Transport during the peak hours was a growing problem. It was. being coped witti in the morning*, but the board's object was to get the jteople home Kfl soon as possible. "At the present time we are using every tram we have in the evenings," said Mr. Xagle. "If we can get a staggering of hours in industry, that is, j different hours of starting and finishing I in various branches, it will be possible > tn secure an easing of the present posi-j tion,"
