CARRICK WINS BY 383 POINTS.
OPEN BILLIARD S FINAL. X.Z. AMATEUR RECORD BREAK OF 179. R. Carrick defeated A. Bowie in the final of the Auckland provincial oi»en championship last night. Carrick had a lead of 200 points at the end of the tirst eession on Wednesday, and finally won by KMX) points to (>l7. A feature of the winner's display was a New Zealand amateur record break of 17!) and another effort of 100 unfinished. Fine all-round play characterised -lite record effort, while his 1(H) break was made mostly wi'th nursery cannons., Carrick, continuing his unfinished break of 33 from the' previous evening, only six points before breaking down. Then Bowie, who dominated the subsequent play, gave himself a fighting chance with a fine sequence of 31, 23, 33. 56, and the scores were thr>n called: Carrick 390, Bowie 534.
At this stage Carrick produced sensational billiards, rolling off a break of 179. and was unlucky to lose the white ball with 200 in night. He followed this up with runs of 32, fS4 and 19, while Bowie's best effort was 23. The score*; at this stage were: Carrick 900, Bowie 617. Giving a masterly exhibition, Carrick then made his second century break of the evening, 100 unfinished, practically all by nursery cannon play. This break took him to the 1000 mark and won him the title.
The trophies were presented to the winner and runner-lip by Mr. S. Holdsworth. president of the New Zealand Billiards Council. A special trophy was also presented to Mr. H. Rae, who was the only player other than the winner to make a break of 100 during the tournament.
