GIFTS FUND.

MT. ALBERT DISTRICT,

FIRST PRESENTATION MADE.

YOUNG MAN FOR AIR SERVICE Inaugurating the scheme under which every resident of the borough will receive a gift on leaving service, a presentation was "made last evening by the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. 11. A. Anderson, in the.. Council Chamber to Mr. A. Hugill, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Hugill, Onslow Road, Mount Albert, on the eve of his departure for abroad to commence training for the Fleet Air Arm. Members of the council and the executive of the Mount Albert District Overseas Gift Fund attended. The Mayor, as chairman of the Gifts Fund Committee, in making the presentation of a wallet containing a sum of money, said that he regretted that it had been impossible to arrange, a more public function, but lie hoped in the future this would be done. He said it gave him great pleasure to make the presentation, because it was the inauguration of the Gifts Fund and also because the recipient was the son of a member of their own council staff. He expressed the best wishes of the people of the borough for the success and safe return of Mr. Hugill, whose, desire to serve his King and country in the present emergency he commended... .. Mr. H. G. Jenkin, president of the Mount Albert R.S.A., referred briefly to active service conditions and also to the great work of the Service which Mr. liugill hoped to join. The men of the borough, he was sure, would respond fully to the call to serve, and all who answered the present necessity would, he was sure, find in it that fine spirit of comradeship that had outlived the last war. On active service men learned the finest elements of comradeship, and the motto was "each for all and all for each." Mr. Jenkin recalled the remark he once heard a padre make, that he had' met more Christianity in khaki than in sackcloth, and said that the Services contained "some of the finest

men it was possible to' meet whose friendship constituted one of the richest treasures of life. On behalf of the R.S.A. he wished Mr. Hugill the very best of luck. 1 It was explained that in addition to the gifts presented on departure, it was also part of the scheme to send parcels to all during their service abroad. Mr. T. R. Congalton, town clerk, is lion, secretary-treasurer of- the fund, and to ensure its successful working it is hoped that the names of all residents eligible for gifts will be sent to him so that all may share in the benefits of the fund. Later in the evening, the Borough Council decided to donate £10 10/ to the Overseas Gift Fund.
