LOCAL BODIES.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH. The Xortlicote Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. K. Martin, presided. Rates.—Rates totalling l/1.30d in the £ on the unimproved value were struck. This rate is the same ae for. the previous year. Vehicular Ferry.—The Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, advised lie hoped to arrange a conference at ail early date between representatives of the council and the Harbour Board to discuss the vehicular ferry service. _ Fire Brigade.—The superintendent of the Fire Brigade reported on the brigade's equipment and that three fires only had occurred in the district during the past 12 months. Water. — The waterworks enginec.' reported that during June 3,014,000 gallo.is of water had bean pumped and the lake level was 6ft 4in below high-water mark, which was 7in lower than at the same date last year. The water bore had now been euuk to approximately 300 ft, but a sufficient eupply of water had not yet been obtained. The council decided to continue with this bore, but not go further than 400 ft.

MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the board was hekl last evening, the chairman, Mr. M. McCul lough, presiding. Rates.—The board resolved to levy the following rates for the current year:—A general rate of 4V6d in the £; hospital and charitable aid rate. 1 5-16 d; street lighting. 7-lfkl; special loan rate, Xo. 1, l%d: special water loans, area No. 1, 3-32 d; Xo. 4, 3/32 d: special drainage rates, eastern area, 2 3-16 d; western area. lOd; sepcial rate in Ridge Road area, 3-16 d; Qneenstown and Seacliffe area, 3-16 d; sewer drainage loan rate, 6d; sanitation charge, 7/6 per dwelling; non-consumers' water rate. 5/ per assessment. A rebate of 5 per cent will be allowed on all amounts paid within 30 days of due date. Public Works.—The estimated expenditure on public works is £10,085. Waterworks Maintenance.—This account has been showing a steady reduction in the debit balance each year. Evacuated British Children.—Details of the scheme were received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, and the board decided to invite offers from residents who are willing to receive children for the duration of the war.

GLEN EDEN TOWN BOARD

The board met on Monday evening. Mr. J. H. Harding, presiding. Estimates— Estimates for the year 131041 were approved. Exclusive of wages subsidies, these showed estimated receipts totalling £6420, which includes rates £3600, water supply account £750. subsidies £930, town hall rente £240, license fees £400. and miscellaneous £500. Estimated receipts for the year 1939-40 totalled £6000; the amount realised was £8607. Estimates of expenditure included interest and sinking fund payments £1659, road maintenance £'2359, water supply £535, town hall £200, street lighting £161, hospital levies £335. reserves £40, administration charges £650, inspection £61, miscellaneous £420. Rates Levied.—Rates were fixed at 13% d in the £ on the unimproved value and a lion-consumers' water rate of l-24d in the £, with a minimum charge of five shillings. The rates remain the same as for the past two years. Street Lighting.—Provision was made in the estimates for the installation of ten additional street lamps, bringing the total to 55. Eleven new lamps were installed during the past year. Bus Shelter.—A position on Kearon's ! roadside reserve in West Coast Road, selected as a site for the proposed new bus shelter, was approved and the work is to be put in hand. The Auckland Bus Comj pany was thanked for contribution made towards the cost of such shelter. E.P.S. Organisation.—The board authorised a contribution of £31 towards the cost of the metropolitan E.P.S. organisation provided that the board is not involved in further commitment. It was decided that all plant, equipment and other facilities of the board be placed at the disposal of the authorities in the event of emergency. Public Buildin'g Licenses.—Licences were granted for five public buildings, subject to compliance with the requisitions of the sanitary inspector in respect of sanitary i arrangements. | Boundary Roads.—lt was decided to 1 make application to the Governor-General j for a warrant, under Section 120, Public Works Act, 1928, apportioning the cost of reconstruction, maintenance and lighting of Edenview Road, which is the boundaryline between the Waitemata County and the town district. Mr. F. MacLeod, foreman, was granted four days' leave on full pay, being time occupied in undergoing military training in the Ex-servicemen's Battalion of the home defence force*.
