INSPIRING EFFORT.
CARNIVAL CORONATION. WORKERS HONOURED. A morning tea reception for all those who had taken part in the coronation ceremony of the recent queen carnival was held in Milne and Choyce's reception hall to-day. Those present included ilrs. Gordon Matthews, the Queen of the Carnival, and the other nine candidates, with the chairmen, secretaries and treasurers of their committees. The Hon. Eliot R. Davis, chairman of the executive committee, presided. Expressing his appreciation on behalf of the executive of the wonderful work which had been done by all those, participating in the queen carnival, Mr. Davis said that they could be happy in the knowledge that thev had done something to assist materially in the struggle in which the Empire was engaged. "After ruthlessly tramping through the smaller nations, the enemy •has now turned hi* attention to England, but here he will find his hardest task," said Mr. Davis. "We must think 'Victory,' and keep that thought always before us,"' he said. Turning to the coronation itself. Mr. Davis said that it reflected the greate.st credit on all concerned. He had been several times round the -world, but lie could truthfully say that it was as beautiful and inspiring an elfort. as could be seen anywhere. He announced that the total contributed by the ten queens amounted to £102,197 14/4. A presentation of flags in each queen's colours was then made to the queens and their representatives. On behalf of the Queen of the South, Mr. J. R. Fow, chairman of the committee, said that the people from the country had enjoyed meeting so many of those whose names were household worde and would go back to the country feeling that they were part of a people unconquerable in spirit. Tributes were paid to Mr. Kenneth Melvin for his successful appeal, and to Mr. John Gordon, who hail assisted him in making it such a wonderful success. Short speeches were also made by Mr. Melvin and Mr. McKay, deputv-chair-man of the executive committee.
