CUSTOMS YIELD.

REVENUES DOWN. £84.000 IN HALF-YEAR. EFFECT OF PETROL SAVING. As -was expected, the effect of war conditions, in New Zealand has been made apparent in a decline in the Customs revenue for the first six. months of the present year. Most pronounced has been the drop in revenue on motor spirit, which is £70,437 less than that of the first half year of 1939 a reflection, of course, of the petrol restrictions' which became operative after the declaration of war last September. Increases are apparent, however, in the revenue from beer excise and sales tax. Actually the drop in revenue of £-17,911 on general customs is more than balanced by tho beer excise increase of £47,980. ' Tho petrol restrictions, however, have turned tho balance of Customs rcvenxic down to such extent that the drop from January to July this year, as compared with revenue.for the same period last year, has been £54,753.' ' \ The collections last month increased in all departments with the exception of motor spirit and tyre duty, as compared with the previous June, but the big fall in petrol importation left June, 1940, down by £9SO as compared with June, 1939.
