TWO PRIZE NIGHTS.

THE DEVONPORT CLUB.

The Devon port Yacht Club held their annual distribution of prizes on Thursday evening in the Masonic Hall. The visitors in-eluded Mr. W. B. Darlow (patron), Mr. M. K. Draffin (R.X.Z.Y.S.) and representatives from sister clubs and local bodies. The. commodore. Mr. Humphrey Duder. welcomed the visitors and briefly reviewed the past season. He thanked all donors of prizes, also Messrs. Lincoln Wood (ricecommodore). R. McC&Uum ( rear-commodore \ and L. V. Scott (honorary secretary), and all who had. assisted to'make the racing a success. Although many members had already joined the fighting forces he hoped to be able to carry on for- the duration of the war and not cease all activities. as was the case during the last war. Mr. Duder requested Mr. Darlow to present the prizes. Mr. Darlow said it had been his privilege during his two years' term as chairman of the Harbour Board to see a big improvement in the amenities provided for yachtsmen. He was only one. of fifteen. and did not claim any special merit. nut in a period of 71 years former boards had spent a total of £114.000 for the benefit of the sport. During his term as chairman the board had started work estimated at £101,000, all of which would be carried to completion. This included the cost of Okaho, Hobson and St. Mary's boat harbours and club buildings. He was hopeful j of extending the area on the northern I shore at no distant date, but the war had | first call on everything. j The following were the principal winners: Keel Yachts.—Gypsy. Duder Cup : Little J trophy ; Ghost Cup ; Kotuku, Mr. A. Foster's trophy; Ghost, club trophy; H. class. Star- I light : Hislop Cup and club trophy ; L class. ! "Herald" Cup. Taotane; Tamariki, commodore's trophy and club prize; Marika. Marie, Valkyrie and Komuri won cash prises. M class, Manene. David Pike Cop and champion flag; Mermerus. Manoa and Moeraagi also won prizes in this class. V class. Jeanette, Shamrock, Matara, Taklna, Arahi. Irena, Lotus. Channaine, Mamaru and Torrens won prizes in this class. Aratu won both S class events. T and X class. Invader. Caress. Salome and Marjorie won I first prizes. T class, Marene, M'tala. Tem- j pest and Demon won first prizes. Z class,! Capri, Waiatua, Te Lua and Robin won first prises in the Takapuna division. Tawaki. Taranui and Te Hoa in the Fupuke division. Xaval whalers. 2SKI won this ■ race. Valerie and Silver Fern won in the Silver Fern class and Sea Elf in the Frpstbites. VICTORIA CLUB. The presentation of prises of the Victoria Cruising Club was held in the Manchester Unity Han, Victoria Street West. Reviewing the past season, the commodore. Mr. Ray Tuohey. said two events had to be postponed on account of the weather, but were carried out later in the season: Their regatta had been a ' great success and all events were closely contested. Thanks were due to the patron. Sir Xknest Davis, for his continued interest and to all who had donated prizes. A special prize of £-5 -given by the patron was awarded to the yacht which had competed in every race and had not won a prise. It was allotted to Marika. In addition to the trophies, Mr. Tuohey said £140 had been paid in cash prizes. ' Mr. O. Johnson presented the prices and congratulated the club on the success of the past .season. Naturally, with 80 members joining up, racing would be curtailed next season, but they should all do their best to keep the flag flying. Mr. Johnson also thanked Mr. Tuohey and Mr. J. McGehan. honorary secretary, for their work on behalf of the club. The principal prizes Boonstra Memorial Cup, for all 14-footers, presented by Messrs. J. and W. Dervan. won bv Invader; Casey Cup, won by Winifred"; Rae Cup, won by Arahi; Roongana Cup, won by Te Hoa; Clare Rose Bowl, won by Takina, representing the Point Chevalier Clnb; Atta trophy, won by Mania, representing the Ponsonby Cruising Club; George Cup. won by Tawaki, also champion flag presented by Mr. A. Braund ; "Whitebait" Cup, presented fey Mr. C. G. Daw, won by Invader, also Anzac Cup, presented by Gunner G. J. iMaekay. Other -prize winners were Starlight (three firsts), Winifred (three firsts), Edna D.. Leona, Meola and Tawaki (two firsts). BOONSTRA MEMORIAE CUP. One of the most keenly contested trophies for the smaller class of yachts in Auckland is the Boonstra Memorial Cup, open to all clashes of 14-footers. It was donated to the Victoria Cruising Club by Messrs. W. and J. Dervan. both good supporters of the club, in memory of Mr. Jack-Boonstra, one of the foundation members of -this club and a good worker for the 14-foot class since its inception. - •■ The cup has -been competed for 18 times, the contestants. Including Lord Jeliicoe In his X class boat Iron Duke. The record of winners is as follows :—1923, Caraid ; 1924, Cupid: 1925, Omaki: 1926. Sea Gnome; 1927- Xgaio; 1925. Alerte; 1929-30. Sbalimar; 1931. Rita: 1932, Rangi; 1933. Idler; 1934, Ace; 1935, Karoro; 1936. Vamp; 1037. Mania; 1938, Invader; 1939. Lena, and 1940, Invader. The cup is of silver and the winner's name ie attached to the plinth each year. It is much prized by the' winners for this reason.
