\lao the large number oi Aackiaad i Horses engaged at the Wellington winter I meeting, which opens at Trenihac on i July 9. considerable interest will be taken 1 in the weights for- the firs: day. which ! were published yesterday. Further-, the! next important meeting to follow is the I Gran. National fixture at Riecarton. and I r -* a _ large number oi the horses racius: | it irentham will subsequently be at! C'liriKchnrch. tbeir form will be closely followed. Moj=>t attention just now will j be paid to the Wellington Steeplechase and the Trenthara Hurdles, j Padishah (12.0) has been awarded topi wight in the Wellington Steeplechase, and j after his easy success Id the i National Steeplechase last Aura?-, with ! 11.5 he is not badly treated, and should | be hard to beat if started. He has hid some racing on the fist recently and has been jumping well at Hasting, Clarion Call (11.11) won his third Wancscii Steeplechase this month with 12.&. and healso will have to be considered. Slayer (10.6) was going well when he fell in tie Wellington Steeplechase last year, sad on the two succeeding days he capture! the Matai Steeplechase, two miles and a half, and the July Steeplechase, three miles, ! the latter being an open event. Going on i to Riccarton. he was third in the Grand j National Steeplechase with 10. S. won the i Beauf..rt Steeplechase, two miles and a j half, with 10.10. and the Lincoln Steeple- ' chase, three miles, with 11.4. Padishah \ gave him lG2h in the Grand National and 1 now has to concede him 221b. Recently Slayer won the Danedin Steeplechase, two ! miles and a quarter, with 11.11, so that j he is back to his best form and can be j expected to give a really good account of himself. Sastoft (10.2) won the Wellington Steeplechase in 1937 with £.0, while in the folio win; season he only had two starts, winning at South Canterbury, while he was second to Erination in the Wellington Steeplechase. He was also second to Erination is the Lincoln Steeplechase the following season, in which he again only started twice. He has not raced this season. Has Carried Big Weights. Small Boy (9J.2) has also been entered for the Mariri Hack and Hunters* Steeplechase as well as the Wellington Steeplechase, and If reserved for the latter will have a show on his recent form, for he has a big drop in the weights from those which he has recently been carrying. He has raced most consistently, for in his last eight starts he has never been further back than fourth, and has won on the flat over hardies and steeples, his successes including the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase with 11.10, while he ran second in the Jane Steeplechase at the same meeting with 12.5. Bally Brit (9.11) is a most promising Southern 'chaser, for In his four starts this season he has-been successful in the last three the Tori Steeplechase, two miles, at Invercargili, the Great Western Steeplechase, three miles, at Klvertdn with 9.5. and the Otago Steeplechase, two miles and a half, at Dnnedin. with 10.3- He is not without prospects. Cottlngham and En Tonr have each 9.1©- The former'has a Grand National Hurdle Race to his credit and recently was third to Nightbound end I Song Boy in the Pareora Steeplechase, aboat two Bile* and a half, at South Cantarbury, and was -fourth in the Otagtf Steeplechase, while he failed at Danedin and- Asbburton. En Tour won both ■ the Waterier* Steeplechase, two miles, at WaTerler,. with 10.10. and the Adamson Steeplechase, two miles, at Egraont, with 10.« recently, and is to be preferred. i Third in Great Nerthera. Hirangi (9-5) ran third in the Great Northern Steeplechase with lib more. He has been a most consistent performer this season and lie will have to be considered. Nigbtbound (9.4) has had only two starts this season for two wins, his successes being in the Craigmore Steeplechase, two miles, with 10.S, and in the Pareora Steeplechase at Sooth Canterbury meeting with 11A. He is a possibility. Tnraki (9.2) was' successful over hardies at the recent Danedin meeting, while among those on the minimum who have prospects are Makol, Floodlight, Gay Boa and Brlgadore. Makoi won the Hunt Cup at Elierslie with 10.8. and was going well in the Winter Steeplechase when be came to grief. How. ever, he is not a sound horse and he may '■ not make the trip. Floodlight ran second in the Green Lane Steeplechase and won the Tamakl Steeplechase at the same meeting, while Brigadore was a good second to I Clarion Call in the Wanganni Steeplechase. , Gay Bo* won the Wingatnl Steeplechase, I two miles and a quarter, at Dunedin. and has been placed in many more this season ; I In fact, in nine starts he has never been out of 'the money. Just now Padishah. Slayer. Clarion Call. Hirangi and Small Boy may appeal most, Jewelled Girdle Top-weight. Jewelled Girdle (11.7) has plenty in the Trentham Hurdles, in which he is topweight. He won the Campbell Hurdles, two miles, at the recent Northern meeting, | and is not altogether out of it despite his ' impost. King Bey (11-3) won this event last yea* with 10.5, while later he ! accounted for the Sydenham Hurdles, two miles, with 10.18. at Kiecarton, after runi ning fourth In the Grand National Hardies 1 with 1010. King Key has since performed well on the flat, and he m not far from his best Just now. Soho (105) has only started four times this season and was second to Bine Tiger in the Rangjtira Hardies', one mile and three-quarters, with 10.13, at Awapuni last month. His next effort was at Wanganni. where he ran third la the Jane Hurdles, of similar distance, with 11-3. while with 11.7 Limbohm beat Mm in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, also run over a mile and Soho should be troublesome. Curie (10.6) was second to Old Surrey in the Century Hardies at Wanganni, two miles and 194 yards, with 10.13, which is his best performance recently. He won the Winter Hardies, two miles and a quarter, with 10.4 last July at Trentham. Three On End. Hessketoon (10.4), after his two successes at Ellerslie and his win at Te Awamntn last week, where he carried 10.0 over a mile and three-quarters, making three victories on end. will have support. Old Snrrev (10.1) won the Century Hurdle* with 9.9 at Wanganni, and that performance alone will commend him to the public. -He was a good horse on the flat. Hirangi (10.0) is also engaged in the steeplechase as well, as this race, and at his best he also will have to be reckoned with if started here. El Meynell. Aussia Ra, Student Prince and Survalyon are on the 0.11 mark. El Meynell has won at his last two starts and will again take some i beating. Student Prince was a winner 'over hardies earlier in »*« season, while, Aussie Ha, who was second to Padishah in the last Grand National Hurdles, in ' which he carried 9.5, showed a return to J form when he ran second to Jewelled ' Girdle In the Campbell Hurdles, two miles, at the Great Northern meeting. He carried 1 0.10 on that occasion. Survalyon was ' third In the Great Northern Hurdles with ! 9 0 and won - the Remuera Hurdles, two miles, on the second day with 5.3. He will have a show. Blue Tiger looks the best of the. others. Those who may be in favour at present are Hessketoon. Old Surrey, Survalyon, El Meynell, Aussie Ra and Soho. _ ;..- ROYAL DANCE SOLD. Royal Dance has been, purchased by Mr. J. H. Greenhead of Rotorua, who formerly raced Erination and Is WtelkolMt . Roval Dance has been difficult to train since his accident, but may come right after a spett. * TE HAKA DOING WELL. Mr J. Clothier has Te Haka, Lady Then, Prince Bewa and Hunting Mac, a two-year- ' old half-brother to Star Vaals by Hunting Song Billlkins, at work. The two lastmentioned have yet to race.
