CAUGHT IN THE ACT.

SHOPLIFTER'S SENTENCE.

Appearing on summons, in the Police Court to-day, before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., a married woman, Enid Faulkner, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a' pot of nasal ointment, two small rolling pins, a comforter and a f>aper hat, of a total value of 3/11 from a city department store on June 11.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that on June 11 defendant and another woman drove to the store in a car and parked outside. Both women entered the store and defendant was caught in the act of stealing. When detained by a member of the firm the articles mentioned in the charge were found in her bag. Mrs. Faulkner had £3 17/6 in her possession at the time, while a search of the car revealed a fairly large sum of money which belonged to her companion. Defendant's companion had a small article in her bag which defendant admitted stealing. However, she was not charged with the theft of the article. Mrs. Faulkner was 37 and had two children. Her husband was in camp. She had never been in any trouble before.

On behalf of defendant, Mr. L. P. Leary made a plea for probation and said there was no reason why, intrinsically, the articles should not have been paid for.

The magistrate convicted and ordered defendant to come 'up for sentence if called upon within six months.
