Night Actions
ENGLAND AND WALES ALARMS United Press Association—Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 20. England, Scotland and Wales were again subjected to air bombing , last night, but there were few casualties, and little damage resulted. In addition to five bombers brought down, it is believed several others were so severely damaged that they were unlikely to reach their bases.
It is officially stated that four were killed and 13 injured. A four-year-old boy was killed and six were injured, including three seriousry, in the Midlands. One bomber is believed to have been shot down over Wales.
The south-east of Scotland bore the brunt of the attack. Parashooters, A.E.P. units and the police .spent the early hours of daylight searching for the wreckage of a bomber which was one of three brought down in Scotland, where a dwelling, in which a mother and daughter were killed, and the father and son were injured, was demolished by bombs. Spectacular Air Fighting. Three bombers were Drought down after terrific ground gunfire and spectacular aerial engagements. British fighters shot down another in flames.
Incendiary bombs started fires in two buildings. Raids also occurred in the north-east, the Midlands and south of England, and in Wales. Raiders crossed the coast at a great height, and many were chased out to sea.
Spectators in the south-east saw a fighter in action after searchlights had picked out a German bomber. Tracer bullets were seen hitting the bomber, which fled. Elsewhere searchlights found a raider, which suddenly spiralled to earth. Two . raiders disappeared after being spotted by searchlights.
High-explosive bombs wrecked several houses in north-eastern England. One bomb was dropped 10 feet from a shelter, in which only one casualty occurred. Bombs repeatedly fell in open country in Wales.
"Tlie Times" says: "In terms of violence unprecedented even in the Third Keieh, the whole German Press announces a. campaign for the annihilation of England. All the papers carry huge headlines unanimously declaring the hour of reckoning for Britain lias arrived." A Berlin communique claims that during the night German aeroplanes successfully attacked numerous aerodromes and aircraft factories in the Midlands of England.
