VICTORY SAVINGS.
KENT FARMER'S £2000.
"SORRY TO BOTHEfe YOU."
(Special.—By Air Mail.)
LONDON, June 1
Mr. Charles George, aged 70, a farmer, of Chelsfield, Kent, came to London this week. He went to the House of Commons and asked to eee his local M.P., Sir Waldron Smithers. i
"Sorry to bother you, Sir Waldron," said Farmer George, "but I'd like you to give this to the Chancellor as a victory gift." Then he handed to Sir Waldron a cheque for £2000—a large part of the savings he and his wife had put by for their old age.
When Sir Waldron recovered from his astonishment he went and personally handed the cheque to Sir Kingsley Wood, Chancellor of the Exchequer. Then he invited Farmer George to tea on the House of Commons' terrace.
Farmer George, back home with his wife, who was not well enough to go with him to town said, "Yes, the money is a large part of our savings. But my wife and. three sons all agreed with my giving it to the country. All I hope is that other people will follow my example, and do all they can to help our) country." i
