SICK AND WOUNDED FUND. GKATITUDE EXI'IIESSKD. Gratitude to the public of the province, who have responded so well to the appeal to assist the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund, was expressed at an informal gathering held this morning at the Waverley Hotel, when members of tie Auckland executive were entertained at morning tea by the chairman of tho Citi:'--?Tii' Commit , , er , . the Hon. Eliot It. Davis, M.L.C., who was accompanied by Mrs. Davis. Six of the metropolitan queens were present. Mr. Davis said the executive was very grateful for the work done, and added that the effort- last evening had been most inspiring. He paid a special tribute to the postmasters and postmistresisos in the province, for assistance given. The honorary organiser for the Dominion, Major .T. Abel, of Wellington, said that there had never been any doubt about the Auckland response, where the. campaign had gone on longer than in the other centres. Thanks were due to all who assisted with the radio appeal last evening, in which, at one stage, they were taking money at the rate of £100 a minute. Auckland had written £10,000 in less than fours hours. Theresult of the appeal would lie that the sick and wounded soldiers would lie well looked after. The deputy-chairman of the executive. Mr. E. F. Mac-key, said that Mr. Davis had done the spade work in the Auckland compaign, and that was the main thing. Mr. J. flordon said that in connection with the radio appeal ao many people offered assistance that there was no need to aek for volunteers. Other speakers were Messrs. R. (.'•. May and L. W. Swan, the latter stating that many donations had yet to be acknowledged. Special votes of thanks were tendered to all who had assisted. It was mentioned that the radio appeal was originally intended to assist the Public Service Queen, but it was ultimately decided that all the queens should share in the effort.
