That was the last ring that came through on the telegraph of the Niagara, and the stokehold crew and the engineers; who were all at their posts, took the next order from the chief to make for the'upper deck. Water was then flowing over the stokehold plates. The tliird engineer, Mr. J. Tiver, was in bed when the crash came, and after pulliii" on his uniform over pyjamas, went to the engine room. He said that every pump was put on to the No. 2 hold which was flooding, but the inrush of water, was too great to be coped with. " When the boats were launched all "kept together, and in one-of the 1 boats there was a wireless plant winch could be operated by levers. The fact that the sea was smooth made the difficulties less than they might other-- . wise have been. i Some years ago Mr. Tiver was a i junior engineer on the Niagara, and this was his first trip after being some time lon the run between Australia and «Tasmania.
