EARLIER CLOSING.

MAILS FOR THE SOUTH. An annoimcemejit that the late afternoon mail for the south would, as from July 1, close at 5 p.m. instead of 5.15 as at present, was made by the Chief Postmaster, Mr. E. G'. May, at to-day's meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce.

"We have 1200 men in the armed forces and we will not be able to give the service that we have in the past," said Mr. May, by way of explanation. He pointed out that, in addition to the men serving in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 500 employees would be called to attend several months' territorial training. Women were being taken on to the stall' as replacements, but it took a long time to train women for service in a mailroom. It was possible, that the closing of the mail might have to be advanced to 4.30 p.m.
