FINED FOR ASSAULT.

SIjANDER AJLSO AXX3BOED. (From Our Own Oomgpondest) PUTARURU, this day. A retired painter, Joseph Roland Henshaw, formerly of i-utaruru, appeared in the Putaruru Police Court before Mr. S. L. Paterson, answer a charge of assaulting Robert Ernest Taylor by striking him in the face. A claim of £100 was also made against Henshaw on the grounds that on February 22. in the bar of the Putaruru Hotel, he falsely and maliciously spoke alleged defamatory words concerning Taylor. On the assault charge the defendant was convicted and fined £10 and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, witnesses' expenses £2 2/6 and solicitor e fee £3 3/. The magistrate ordered that half the fine be paid to the defendant. After lengthy submissions by both counsel on a point of law, the magistrate reserved his decision in the claim for damages.
