TAHITI'S LOSS RECALLED. The Royal Mail steamer Tahiti, of the Union Company's fleet, was lost on August 16, 1930, when on a voyage from Wellington to San Francieco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. She left Wellington Auguet 12 with 128 passengers and when 460 miles from Rarotonga lost a propeller and part of the shaft. Water came in through the aperture. The vessel remained afloat for two days and then sank, all passengers and crew being removed to the Ventura. The Norwegian tramp steamer Penybryn aleo stood by during the accident.
