OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu - Borough Council was held last evening, the 1 depiity-Mayor, Mr. A. Murdoch, 'presiding. Refugee Children.—Dealing with the , circular letter from the Mayor of Napier in regard to refugee children, the council was favourable to a register being astab- ; lis lied for the purpose of ascertaining those , prepared to care for refugees, but deferred , action until the Government proposals are , made known. Telephone Exchange. — Owing to the country from which automatic telephones are imported being at war, the Postmastert»eneral advised that it was impossible at present to comply with the councils request to have an automatic exchange for Otahuhu. Street Lighting.—Advice was received from the Auckland Electric Power Board relating to their price of £45 made 2% years ago in respect of community and street lighting that the cost would now be £66. The board recommended postponement of the scheme until more normal times. Quarry Site.—The council accepted a recommendation from the legal and finance committee to pay £250 annually to the Auckland Hospital Board until the balance owing on the quarry site is liquidated. Donations.—lt was decided to make a grant of £10 to the library committee with the proviso that every effort be made in the direction of making the library more modern. The sum of £10 10/ was also donated to the Red Cross Society to be credited to the Public Service Queen. Traffic Inspector's Report.—The traffic inspector reported that during the past 12 months he had issued 1544 drivers' licenses against 1415 for the previous year. The pedestrian crossing poles are now all erected. Bus stops need repainting in and the report recommended agreement with the letter from the Transport Department regarding accident repeaters. Building Permits.—Since last council meeting building permits to the va'ue of £1233 have been issued. Matter for Withdrawal.—Arising from a statement made at a previous meeting, when a deputation from the Rugby League ' Football Club waited 011 the council and' complained of being charged for use of water for which they had not received an ! account for seven years, a member con-1 sidered the statement should be with-' drawn in view of the fact that duplicates could be produced proving that the club had received annual accounts. The council ! will reconsider the charge of £2 12/ perl year for the use of the playing area.
