USEFUL HINTS.

Now that everyone lias to economise more or less, many women are finding it advisable to do more washing at home. If there are no facilities for having a big wash once a week —antl unless a woman is very strong or she has help, she will find a weekly washing day very tiling—it is best not to let soiled articles accumulate, but to wash a few things two or three times a week.

In many households, sheets, table linen, bath towels, shirts and such things as cliair covers, bedspreads, etc., are sent to the laundry, and handkerchiefs, underwear, stockings, small articles of all kinds, teacloths and dusters are washed at home. Stockings need frequent washing, and one or two pairs can be quickly washed every day, and at the same time a blouse or jumper, child's frock or overall can be washed. If teacloths and glaissc-loths are washed thoroughly and hung out-of-doors to dry at, least once a day—if thero are many dishes they Ghould be rinsed out and dried after the two chief meals of the day—they will keep quite a good colour bv one good boiling a week.

When there is not a boiler for boiling clothes, it is a good plan to set aside a large enamel saucepan especially for boiling handkerchiefs and other small articles. If rainwater can be obtained it should always be used for washing, especially for woollens. If only hard water is'available, soften it with borax, or a few drops of ammonia. Warm, not hot, water should always be used, and it is well to dissolve some soap flakes in it to make a soapy lather and steep the woolle'ns in it. Soap should never be rubbed directly <»n them.
