NEW FORM OF SPEAKING.
Persons without vocal chords are being taught to speak with their stomachs by Temple University (Philadelphia) scientists. Dr. Nathan M. Levin, of the Department of bronchoscopy, says that about 2o former patient* now converse, normally—although lacking a larynx (voice box). He explains that, as the patient breathes through a small opening in the throat, he also swallows air. Properly instructed, the patient can expel the swallowed air and form words ■with lips, tongue and teeth.
