DUCK SHOOTING.
CLOSE SEASON OPPOSED. Contending that a closed season for duck would not result in any material gain towards conserving birds, the Paeroa Acclimatisation Society has forwarded a statement to the Auckland Acclimatisation Society in support of representations that are to be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs concerning tiie matter.
It ie stated that the club strongly opposed a close season for the reasons that the natural cunning of the bird was not preserved and the birds fell easy prey to vermin and unauthorised shooters; that the due); population was regulated by the available food supply and the logical method of increasing it was by Teecarch into and the increase of such food supply; and that in the Hauraki Plains district in particular the greatest mortality was caused by the destruction of nests, eggs and young by fires.
