BETTING CHARGES.

TOBACCONIST BEFORE COURT. BOOKMAKER PAYS FJXES. "Since 1037 this man has paid £SSO in fines on betting charges," said DetectiveSergeant Tretliewey when William Thomas Osmond, aged 3S, pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon to a charge of keeping premises at 1 ■">(>, Hobson Street, as a common gaining house. Detective-Sergeant Tretliewey sai.l that earlier in the afternoon Osmond had been arrested by Detective-Sergeant Apliu. He had a tobacconist's shop in Hobson Street, and there the detective seized a large quantity of betting material, which showed defendant was betting both on doubles and single pool. Defendant was in a big way. Mr. Morling, S.M., lined defendant £100. Richard Albert Daley, lodging-house keeper, aged 40, pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Tretliewey said Daley had been arrested as a result of complaints that he was betting openly in a city hotel bar. When arrested ha had a small quantity of betting material in his possession. He had been taking bets in amounts mostly of 10/ and 5/, and was not in a big way. Mr. F. W. Schramm appeared for defendant and said Daley had been betting only in a small way, and it was his first breach of the Gaming Act. The magistrate fined defendant £20. *nd allowed one month in which to pay.
