SOME SURPRISES.

MAIORO PAYS MOST. JACK TAR SUCCEEDS. MERRY VAALS THE SPRINT. Three first favourites were successful at Whangarei yesterday -when the Whangarci Racing Club opened its autumn meeting, while the best dividend was returned by Maioro, who just lasted long enough to beat the fast-finishing Clinch by a nose in the Maungatapere Handicap, returning over a. score. Sir Robin, winner of the opening event, the Portland Handicap, paid about half that price. The Mclnnes Memorial Handicap, the principal race of the day. was won by the favourite Jack Tar. He was always nicely placed and once in line came through to score decisively.

Sigurd, making his first appearance as a hurdler, ran to the front about half a mile from home and was never afterwards headed, while High Delight, who had been a very long way back for the greater par<of the journey finished on to get second, just beating Dauber (wLq, with Rajauya, had made the pace for a long way) for second money. An inquiry was held into the handling of High Delight, and J. Mtiir, the jockey, was fined .Id for careless riding. There was an excellent finish in the Stewards' Handicap, the favourite Merry Vaals just getting up in the last stride to beat the second fancy C'orato. Aero King and Trilliarch were quickly in front and Trilliarch just led C'orato at the turn, the pair being followed bv Maxam and -Miss Te Koura. C'orato then took charge, but Merry Vaals, who caane from a long way back, finished just too well for him to win by a head, with Aero King a neck away third. Trilliarch, Very GJad. Brazilian, Miss Te K-Ourc, Orate and Maxam followed. The Frankton-trained General Riske was one of the leaders all the way in the Stewards' Handicap. He was followed across the top by the favourite Runanga, Acquest, Surpass and Valley Maid. There waa no alteration at the home turn and General Rieke went on to win by_ four lengths from Runanga, who beat Valley % Maid by two lengths and a half. Acquest. Surpass, Clansman and Tea Raider were next. Land Court was very fractious at the post and refused to line up, taking no part in the race. Maioro registered his first win when he accounted for the Maungatapere Handicap. He was second to Pantheist half a mile from home, but had headed Pantheist at ' the home turn, where Strathire and Mer-! cury Bay were also prominent. He was well clear half way down, where Clinch, the favourite, who came from a long way back, put in a great run, but just failed to reach Maioro by a nose. Erination, Chief Lap. Lady Acuehla, Hunting Bee and Lord Waitangi were next. The Dozer, favourite for the Watpu Handicap, the concluding event, led all the way to win by a length and a quarter from Silver Eagle, with Xoitaro a length and a halT away third. Very Glad, Mai de Mer and Hutana were iw*t. The weather waa fine, there was a large attendance and the track was in excellent order. During the day the sum of £18.479 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £16,302 10/ for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2117. Later results are:—
