CLUB MANAGER FINED.

Remarking that the case was not so pravc as where fruit machines were conducted generally, Mr. J. Morlinjr, S.M., to-day fined M. McLennan £15 on a charge of keeping a common fining house. Defendant pleaded guilty.

Senior-Sergeant Joyce «*aid the defendant was manager of the Kl 15ey Country Club, ,ind on three occasion* police had visited the club «nd played <»n a fruit machine. When the police warrant was executed the machine had disappeared. Defendant said the machine did not .belong to. him. and that he received f>o per cent of the takings.

Mr. Terry, counsel for the defendant, said that the club had been conducted in a manner, and that the machine was there a* the request of the members. Counsel said he did not object to the methods of the police, but they allowed defendant to carry on when one word from them would have meant the machine would have been removed.

In fining the defendant, the magistrate said that it must be well-known that fruit machines are illegal.
