The Portland Hack Handicap provided a surpri«*o, J>ir Kobin, who was liandihr placed all the way. returning double ligures. Hunter's Rose was with him from the r-tart. and only inche> M-]>arated the pair at the finish. Tellsoui ran a fair rave to pet third, while Ks<jtiire. the favourite, ran very wide at llie turn, and the best he enuld do wa- to finigj, fourth. Beeswing was caught in the. ta|>es at the ?tart. losing a bit oi ground, and the fir*t to show out were Hunter's Rose and .Sir Kobin. This pair were still in charge across the top from Flying Eagle, Tellsom. Ksquire and Bronze Kmerald. Hunter's Rose and Sir Kobin led into the straight from Flying Kagle, Teilsom, Fairlield and Esquire, while Miss Valerie appeared to meet with a bit of trouble at this stage. In a good finish, Sir Kobin won by a ne<-k from Hunter's Rose, who beat Tellsom by half a length. !-><Hiire was ripht up fourth, and then came Flying Kagle. Beeswing, Hist Valerie and Bronze Emerald.

Favourite Just Fails. The favourite. Akanora. tried to lead all the way in the Trial Slakes, and halfway down the titraiirlit looked m thought she would succeed. However Kraal, second fancy, who was liandilr placed all the way. then put in a strong challenge and jfot up to beat her by a, neck. Jack Tar then drew out and w«nt on to win by three-quarters of a length from Silver Cloud, who beat Raepata by a length, and a half.
