SPECTACULAR SIGHT.
Large Hawaiian Mountain
Erupting.
OBSERVED FROM AIR.
(Received 10 a.m.) HONOLULU, April 8. Ma tin a Loa is spectacularly erupting. Aerial observers report that the lava streams are heading for barren ground. The snow-capped mountain violently erupted early this morning after five years' inactivity. Lava is flowing towards the sea through uninhabited territory. The eruption is spectacular, but not dangerous to the islauders.
Manna Loa (Hawaiian for the extensive mountain) is situated on Hawaii, the largest and southernmost of the Sandwich Islands. The island is a mass of volcanic rock and lava and contains several lofty peaks, of which Mauna Loa (13,760 feet) is one of the highest. The middle of the island consists of a wild rujrped plateau, without inhabitants. The north-east coast is watered by numerous streams, and the soil is very fertile, in which sugar-cane and other tropical products are cultivated. In the extreme north are excellent pastures, but the west face of the plateau is completely arid and waterless. At Kealakeakua Bay, on the west side of the island, Captain Cook was murdered by the natives, in 1779.
