FOR THE NAVY.
TEMPORARY OFFICERS. THREE AUCKLAXDERS. Among tlic 10 yachtsmen nnd experienced ex-mercantile marine officers who have been chosen for temporary commissions in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve are three Aucklanders. Subject to passing the required medical examination, they will be appointed as temporary sub-lieutenants and will serve in minesweepers and patrol craft overseas. The successful Auckland men areff— Mr. H. J. C. George, an ex-commodore of the Royal Xew Zealand Yacht Squadron and owner of the first-class yacht
Victory; Mr. W. Scott Wilson, rearcommodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and owner of the firstclase yacht Tawera; and Mr. S. G. Jervis, a member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and skipper of the first-class yacht Little Jim. Each of the candidates recently qualified for yachtmaster<>' certificates. Mr. Jervis is at present serving iii the Second Echelon. Many other Auckland yachtsmen have been informed that they are regarded as suitable for appointment but have not been selected. It is stated that at least 20 are being held for replacement selection purposes if any of those chosen do not pass the medical examination. When the Navy Office announced that the Admiralty had decided to invite New Zealandcrs to assist in supplying junior officers for minesweeper "and patrol duty some 500 applications had been received. The selection board recently sat in Auckland.
