D. DUNFORD AGAIN.

REPEATS SWIMMING VICTORY. CLAIM FOR N.Z. 50 METRES RECORD. Of all Auckland's girl swimmers undoubtedly the speediest at short dashes at present is Deidre Dun ford. Already the 50 yards Auckland champion, she captured the newly-instituted 50 metres title at the Xewmarket Amateur Swimming Club's carnival in the Olympic Pool on Saturday night. A crowd of at least 1000 spectators—a good attendance for a club carnival with no special attractions —saw her lead all the way to a one-foot victory from Norma Griffin, of Kaikohe, with Violet Karaitiana (nee Coulthurst) in third position, inches further back. The time was 345. There has never been a Kew Zealand record for this seldomraced distance, but recognition of Miss Dunford's time will be sought from the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Two or three girls outside Auckland could swim faster than 345. but if the time is officially approved, it will be a good initial standard for others to try to better. (Miss Dunford, who is really an intermediate, has shown steady improvement within the last few weeks. The carnival was not lacking In good performances. The fast-moving intermediate P. Borrington (Waitemata) added to his succession of wins in handicap events with a first placing in the 50 metres bovs' event, turning in the smart time of 295. Miss M. Kearney (North Shore) did well to win the 50 metres junior girls' in 37 2-ss. Another North Shore swimmer, Barry Clench, had a win in the 100 riietres open handicap, taking 1.12 2-5. Nancy Ludlow (Waitemata) -vns first in the ladies' event in 1.22. The stamina developed by Lionel Camplin (Parnell) in harbour races stood him in good stead in the 200 metres open, enabling him to keep in front for a fairly comfortable victory. The 400 metres inter-club relay was won by Mount Eden's nine men. who defeated North Shore by a wide margin in 5.23. All times again proved that the Olympic Pool does not assist towards making fast times. Women's Auckland Championship. 50 Metres.—D. Dunford (N.S.) 1. N. Griffin (Kai.) 2, Mrs. V.
