WIDOWER'S THEFTS COURT GRANTS PROBATION. \ . • On three charges of the theft of hair brushes, mirrors and a comb, of a total value of £13 7/6, Charles Russell, '-•leaiier, aged 55, pleaded guilty before lir-J:rMorling, S.M., iu the Police Court to-day. Detective F. Quin read statements made by the accused in which he said he was a widower receiving 16/8 sustenance weekly. He worked two hours daily for a brush manufacturing company and in November last had taken parts from the factory and later assembled them into toilet sets. He was president of a club and had raffled the articles at social evenings held by the club. \ Detective-Sergeant Nalder, who prosecuted, said that accused was very frank when interviewed, by Detective Quin. He had not been m trouble before, and £5 would probably cover the extent of the damage done to the goods which had been recovered by the police. .After hearing a strong plea for leniency made by Mr. Aekine, the magistrate said he was satisfied accused had acted under stress of circumstances and he would be admitted to probation for one He did not think it a case where he should make an order against accused to-cover the- amount- of damage done to the goods.
