COUNCIL MEETING. 110 NEW SUBSIDISED WORKS. REPLY TO DEPARTMENT. Variojis items of civic business were dealt with at a meeting of the City Council last evening:. A circular from the assistant -secretary of the Department of Labour wae read advising employing authorities ttiat should they desire any assistance 'by way of subsidised labour in the approaching financial year application should l>e now made to the Department, and asking for a full statement setting out the works the council desired to undertake during the ensuing year. The council decided to reply that it had no new works to pro]***; at present. The Department advised that the generous subsidies granted during 1939-40 would not again be made available, but did not intimate to what extent the subsidy per man would be available. Concert Chamber.—Following the city engineer's estimate of £290 for cleaning the walls and ceiling and painting with two coate on the interior of the concert chamber of the Town Hall, it was decided on the recommendation of the (in**- committee that the work be authorised. Library Conference.—Delegates to the New Zealand Libraries' Conference, held in Wellington in February, furnished a report in which it was stated that the 1941 conference would be held in Dunedin. Dangerous Paths.—Following a statement made by Mr. A. St. Clair Brown at a meeting of the parks committee, calling attention to the dangerous condition of paths in Alliert Park, the city engineer, Mr. ,T. Tyler. re|M»rted that the paths leading from Wellcslcy Street. Victoria Street and Bowen Avenue were in a dangerous condition, and suggested that a bituminous sand mixture surfacing should make a non-elipperv surface. This work could be carried out on the three paths for £125. Tt was decided that in the meantime work on the Bowen Avenue path be carried out in bitumen sand mixture at an estimated cost of £45. Temporary Staff.—Tt was decided that appointments to the staff to replace to some extent the members of the permanent staff who join the forces must be regarded as of a temporary nature only, to terminate at the pleasure o4 the council, or as, soon as permanent members return to duty. Municipal Conference.—The secretary of the Municipal Association of Xew Zealand advised that the next conference in 1!»41 would be held in Auckland, in acordance with the invitation extended ■ by the Auckland City Council. He asked whether the council would be agreeable for the conference to o|H>n on Tuesday. March 4. The matter was referred to the finance committee with power to act. Request Xot Met.—To a request from the secretary of the Auckland City Council Employees' Sick and Accident Society that the council favourably consider the paying of contributions to the secretary of those members who had already joined any branch of the forces for war service or who may do «o in future, the finance committee recommended that a reply be made that as the counncil has already made a generous contribution to men enlisting by making up the difference 'between service pay and the ordinary salary or wages, that the council regrets that it is unable to accede to the request. The recommendation wae adopted.
