(Received u a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Owing to protracted drought conlitions, there is a serious shortage >f milk in Sydney. During the eek-end private individuals, milk ars and small shops were rationed Y 20 per cent. The end of the record heat wave es [>erienced over the State during th« last week, and possibly the end of th« lroupht, is heralded by a cool souther]v •hanue.
The water shortage in many towns is at present desperate. The summer rainfall in .Sydney this year was the lowest on record, while b'u*h fires have caused enormous damage.
Passengers on two divisions of the Melbourne express, both of which arrived at Sydney six hours late, spent a night of anxiety as the trains sped through miles of fierce bush fires.
In Victoria, railway bridges caught fire, but breakdown gangs did great work in keeping the lines safe.
