The challenge cricket match tor the Hawke Cup by Bay of Plenty against Manawatu began in fine weather. The wicket was slow, and the visitors, batting first, at luncheon, had lost live wickets for 80 runs. Bay of Plenty were all out for 07 an hour after resumption. Manawatu making 220, led by 123 runs.
