CENTENNIAL TOURNEY. AUCKI/AND BEATS CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. Some 400 girls from all parts of New Zealand are taking part in the New Zealand Centennial basketball tournament, which commenced in Wellington yesterday under ideal weather conditions. Twenty-two senior and school 'teams are competing and the standard of play yesterday was surprisingly . high considering .the fact that the tonrnainent is taking place so eariy In tne season. Two surprises were recorded during the afternoon in the/ .defeat of Wellington, co-*older of the senior trophy with: Auckland, by the Hawke's Bay team, and, also the defeat of Walkato, holder of the second grade* trophy,. by Ashburton. .... ■ v^' The tournament was officially, opened by the Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, and the visiting players were, welcomed to Wellington by Miss O. Wharton, president pf- the Wellington -Association. Thereafter a spectacular parade of the participating teams was held.
