CHEF CONVICTED.

MILITARY CAMP THEFTS. [By Telcfrapli.—Press Association.) TIMARU, Friday. In the Police Court Harold Frederick Howes was convicted and lined flO for the theft of goods from the Cave military camp. The evidence was to the effect that cornflour, tea, jam and a leg of mutton, valued at 13/3, were given by accused to a photographer, who said he asked accused, who was a chef, to keep him the wastage when the camp broke up. The photographer alleged that he had seen butter, meat and vegetables thrown to pigs after other camps.

The defence was a denial of theft and an assertion that the case was one of mistaken identity. The Court held that theft was clearly established.
