HIT WITH WHIP.

WIFE IN A STAGE TURN. JUDGE REFUSES DIVORCE. LOXDOX, February 22. Mr. Roger Leon George Varenne and his wife, Mrs. Jessie Vmcnne, were partners in a stage turn. During the act the husband used a stockwhip to cut a cigarette his wife held between her lips. ' In the Divorce Court yesterday Mrs. Varenne asked for the marriage to be dissolved on the ground of cruelty. One of her allegations was that, when in a temper, her husband used the whip iu such a way that the throng caused weals on ber face and head. Dismissing the petition Mr. Justice Bucknill said the evidence was that instead of laying the wliip down atter havin" missed the cigarette at the first attempt Mr. Varenne lashed at the cigarette four timc3 and hit liU wife on tne head.

"I think he was in a passion," added the judge, "and was completely reckless as to whether he hit her or not.

I "That he behaved badly seems clear. 1 Ibut apart from the language he used and the whip incident I cannot find any nets of violence he has done to her or any injury to her health. "I am not satisfied that he ha* been guilty of legal cruelty."-
